To develop a masterplan for the rejuvenation of the gardens and demesne landscape.
The house and landscape are now considered to be amongst the finest in Ireland. Working closely with Baron Magan of Castletown and his design team we developed proposals for the restoration of surviving elements of the historic landscape such as the canal, lake, estate entrances and garden structure. We advised on and supervised construction for extensive new landscape works including a ha-ha wall around the garden; statuary, fountains and formal planting at the house; a new stone paved forecourt; and woodland garden. We also created, through former beet fields, a new parkland approach to the house, planting and drive alignment guided by our analysis of key views to and from the house. The landscape project ran alongside the extensive architectural restoration of this important Palladian house and we were fully involved over a 12-year period supervising contractors and liaising with the estate landscape team.
