We are frequently involved in the preparation of master plans for projects varying in size from private gardens and small urban spaces to the largest botanical collections, zoos, parks and industrial landscapes. We bring the same rigorous approach to these projects that we apply to all our work, ensuring success through thorough research and survey, a comprehensive understanding of the site and close attention to the needs of the client and users of the landscape.
We are adept at reconfiguring existing landscapes as well as designing anew. Wherever appropriate we take advantage of the first hand knowledge and expertise of staff within organisations such as botanic and zoological gardens, using workshops to maximise their ownership of the developing designs.
Royal Parks case study Our commission with the Royal Parks started in 1992 and continues to this day. Covering the Inner London parks, the commission provides a landscape design and consultancy service to a diverse range of challenges. We have undertaken numerous studies and implemented many schemes working closely with managers of each park, often involving consultation with English Heritage, Westminster City Council and park user groups. Projects include management plans for each park and consideration of the impact of surrounding buildings and development; detailed analysis of the historical formation of the parks; new and refurbished gardens, open spaces, gateways, path routes and waterbodies; areas for waterfowl and wildlife; and the replacement of bridges, buildings and children’s play areas. A balance between the current use of each area and its historical development and significance always requires careful consideration. When existing facilities come to the end of their life, or have become inappropriate, there is an opportunity to design with a sympathetic eye to history and at the same time accommodate modern use. |
