We were commissioned to prepare a landscape strategy and masterplan to contribute to Penoyre and Prasad Architects’ urban analysis and proposals for a town centre site in Gravesend.
Our landscape strategy defined the context of the site in terms of its approaches, urban nodes, views, trees and open green space for the development of the masterplan. Key views to Windmill Hill to the south were protected from intrusion by proposed buildings and trees. The nature of open green space was redefined to retain the density of the urban grain and avoid the ‘green deserts’ found elsewhere in the town centre.
Step One of the masterplan implementation includes two new semi-public gardens within new residential developments. A new civic landscape around the central retained public car park completes the transformation and is intended to lift the perception of the site to encourage further regeneration of surrounding areas. Steps Two to Five of the masterplan implementation are planned to continue across the public car park within the framework civic landscape secured in Step One.
