The richness of this internationally-important plant collection was not matched by a comparable strength, clarity or interest of layout. A masterplan was commissioned to provide proposals for the improvement of the collection, parts of which are overcrowded, and its presentation to expert and laymen, and to create a framework for its development.
Our masterplan proposed the siting of a major new visitor centre and its car park; and around it the creation of a dynamic network (one in which the visitor is constantly drawn to explore further) of spaces and paths, using focal attractions such as a lake, shelters, sculpture and seats. Viewlines within the gardens and to the countryside beyond are created everywhere. This framework produces intensified opportunities to accommodate and display the collection, and will bring areas that at present are little-visited into general circulation.
