One of the finest eighteenth century houses in Ireland, Castletown house by Davis Duckart has undergone an extensive programme of restoration. The house has been reunited with much of its land and a new 176 acre park has been created from an agricultural landscape including a new serpentine river with stone bridges and a major new approach drive to the house.
Around the house the formal gardens have been reconstructed with a new stone ha-ha providing the boundary to the park. The new gardens are restrained compositions designed to compliment the grandeur of the house, its position and the stunning southerly prospect to the Comeragh Mountains. Rich herbaceous planting and historic box parterres are constrained within a framework of clipped hedges and statuary.
Other works have included the restoration of the Duckart designed canal and lake and the development of an extensive new woodland garden in mature woods beside the house. A new walled garden and service yard is proposed and the landscape proposals will at maturity provide a setting worthy of the finest architecture.
