Portfolio Houses and Gardens

Kerandraon

Disused for many years, the garden became buried in self-sown woodland.  Using compass bearings, the view was re-opened, but the remaining tree cover was ravaged by the 1987 hurricane.

The reconstructed garden includes a parterre planted with herbs in front of the house, while the client’s desire for an "English garden" on the seaward side is expressed in sweeping lawns flanked by borders of deliberate horticultural virtuosity exploiting the mild climate.  The owner has a special interest in herbaceous plants and there is an emphasis on colour for the summer months.

The heath garden is sited to keep sea views open below a dramatic rock bastion (concealing the rainwater storage reservoir and supporting a gazebo). The lower part of the site, extremely steep, is woodland, which has been underplanted with Magnolias and Rhododendrons in the manner of the great Cornish gardens.
