The single storey house was designed to exploit a gap between houses on the edge of the village. The site has extensive views east across a valley and the strategy developed with Marks Barfield Architects sought to retain these views for people using the adjacent highway and to retain the setting of Mill Hill School by placing the house partially buried into the slope of the hillside. This also produced a very energy-efficient design for the house, sheltered by earth at the back and over the roof, with wide open views from the glazed façade.
Close to the house, terraces were designed in a series of parallel steps down from the roof garden and the house level “melting” into the slope at their edges. In contrast to linear formality close to the house, the larger part of the grounds were designed for enhancing their nature conservation value, utilising springs to form wet meadows and pools, reinforcing existing hedgerows and planting new areas of scrub and trees.
