Godinton Park

The report was commissioned by the Godinton House Preservation Trust as part of a Countryside Stewardship Scheme application for grant-aid assistance to restore the historic landscape at Godinton.  The scope of the study included an archival review of park history, and site survey of field archaeology, ecology, views and threats to the landscape, public access, and current estate management arrangements.

Proposals included existing tree replacement, new planting, veteran tree management, repair to physical features, and woodland and hedgerow management.  The remaining parkland presents a Spartan tree canopy by comparison with the historic structure evident on the Victorian Ordnance Survey.  The proposals focussed on the restoration of the spatial and species balance of historic tree structure, with particular attention given to screening the park from adjacent  development, and from more distant visual intrusions.
