Robert Weir Shultz was commissioned in the early 1890’s by the 3rd Marquess of Bute, to design new gardens for the St. John’s Lodge villa. Later under public control, the gardens were set out as a formal rose garden along the eastern axis of the villa.
In 1994, the Royal Parks asked Colvin and Moggridge to undertake a series of works to enrich what remained of the heart of the Shultz layout. The public garden was extended northwards and original features were reintroduced. Planting throughout the garden is new and has a particular emphasis on scented plants and an extended seasonal interest.
