Newington Green

Colvin and Moggridge were approached by Haworth Tompkins Architects to design a landscape strategy to inform a new building proposal for Shaftesbury Student Housing Ltd within the Newington Green Conservation Area.

Conceived as pavilions in a landscape setting, the architectural scheme draws upon the mature tree presence around the periphery and allows light to penetrate across the depth of the site. The landscape strategy carries this concept further. A woodland garden planting theme creates a contrasting context for the clean pale rendered lines of the pavilions which are set a little below ground level and connected by a sunken garden.  Here, formal paving and low clipped hedges frame flowering and scented plants in the populated core of the site.

Stone remnants and inscriptions salvaged from the demolished building were re-used within the garden scheme as sculptural features and echoes of the past.
