Thatched Barn Proposed Plan

New Visitor Facilities Centre

Expertise / Green Belt / Historic Landscapes / Landscape Design Statements / Landscape Designs / LVIA

The Challenge

To secure planning consent for a new visitor facility on the edge of the Meadow at Christ Church, Oxford. The site is a historic landscape and lies within the Oxford City Green Belt.

The Outcome

To create a strong native landscape framework with long-term management proposals so that the barn-like buildings, designed by Purcell Architects, remain discreet elements within the landscape, rather than dominant features. Planning consent was unanimously granted to transform the early 19th century thatched barn into a new visitor centre with further facilities housed in contemporary extensions on either side of the original barn.
