Landscape masterplan: Jersey Zoo (Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust). Masterplan allows visitors to view the animals in as natural a way as possible.
Our Masterplan for Jersey Zoo, developed with the zoo directorate, created an open and welcoming entrance, designed to draw visitors in and direct them in their circulation of the zoo.
We developed the designs for the enclosures in partnership with the animal keepers. Each enclosure is designed around the specific needs of the animals, encouraging natural social behaviour and good health.
South American woodland planting, rocks, rough vegetation and old trees mimic the Spectacled Bears natural, rugged habitat.
Jersey Zoo’s central valley, which is now home to a flamboyant flurry of Pink Flamingos and other waterfowl, was redesigned to incorporate circulating water to clean the watercourse naturally.
We also planted reed beds to extract excess nutrients from the watercourses.
And we created cascades to aerate the water and enhance its quality.
Our masterplan leads visitors through the different animal enclosures so that they can view the animals in as natural a way a possible. This was achieved, not only by working closely with the zoo staff, but also the architects and specialist contractors.
