This once derelict 18th-century mansion, with its badly neglected park (designed by ‘Capability’ Brown) is now home to a brand new art gallery of international standing. Our Conservation Management Plan ensured that the genius loci of the place remained intact.
Following our guidance, the new gallery has been carefully integrated into the landscape creating a place where art, architecture, history and landscape fuse.
Paths mown through meadow have been designed to allow visitors to fully appreciate the character and spirit of the place.
Views within the grounds and parkland are controlled so as to emphasise the beautiful simplicity of Capability Brown’s designed landscape.
In deciding which historic trees to keep we had to find a careful balance between preserving the original park design while also integrating the new facilities.
We cleared an overgrown woodland on the east side of the Compton Verney lake so as to reopen views to the house, which can now be enjoyed from re-instated historic path routes.
Brown originally intended these views of the house to be seen from across the water. Today, visitors are once again able to enjoy the same outlook as the gentry.
